First Commercial Oil from Dai Hung Phase 3: A Testament to Vietnam's Self-Reliant Energy Industry

At 18:50 on May 7th, the Phase 3 development project of the Dai Hung oil field officially commenced production of its first oil, with an initial flow rate of 6,000 barrels per day — reaching the milestone 20 days ahead of the adjusted schedule. This is a highly significant achievement coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Vietnam National Oil and Gas Group (Petrovietnam).

In October 2003, the Government assigned Petrovietnam the direct rights to carry out petroleum operations at the Dai Hung field (Block 05-1(a), located in the Nam Con Son Basin, offshore southern Vietnam, approximately 265 km southeast of Vung Tau city, in water depths ranging from 110 to 120 meters), after the international contractor consortium withdrew, deeming the field economically unviable.

Following the Government’s directive, Petrovietnam has operated the field safely and efficiently. The petroleum contract for Block 05-1(a) was signed in 2009, with PVEP (PetroVietnam Exploration Production Corporation – a subsidiary of Petrovietnam) holding 100% participating interest, and PVEP POC (PVEP Domestic Exploration Production Operating Company – a PVEP subsidiary) serving as the Operator.

As of the end of April 2025, the Dai Hung field has produced nearly 75 million barrels of oil, making a substantial contribution to national revenue, generating employment for thousands of workers over the years, and playing a vital role in ensuring energy security and safeguarding the nation’s maritime sovereignty.

The WHP-DH01 platform, part of Phase 3 of the Dai Hung oil field development project, officially commenced first commercial oil production on May 7, 2025.

On June 23, 2022, the Prime Minister approved the Field Development Plan (FDP) for Phase 3 of the Dai Hung oil field. After a challenging implementation process, the project officially commenced first oil production on May 7, 2025, with an initial flow rate of 6,000 barrels per day — reaching the milestone 20 days ahead of the adjusted schedule.

The project was fully executed by a 100% Vietnamese workforce within the Petrovietnam ecosystem, covering the entire scope from planning, design, construction to supervision. The EPCI contractor was the Vietsovpetro Joint Venture, supported by key project partners: PetroVietnam Technical Services Corporation (PTSC) and PetroVietnam Drilling and Well Services Corporation (PV Drilling). Together, the Petrovietnam workforce overcame unprecedented challenges to successfully bring the Dai Hung Phase 3 project to completion.

The project plays a pivotal role in sustaining production at the Dai Hung field, enhancing recovery efficiency, and improving overall economic returns. Moreover, it paves the way for further exploration and potential expansion within Block 05.1(a) and adjacent blocks — a strategic step toward ensuring national energy security and safeguarding Vietnam’s maritime sovereignty.

An Overview of the WHP-DH01 Platform – Part of the Phase 3 Dai Hung Field Development Project

The success of the project not only helps maintain production at the Dai Hung field but also contributes significantly to the overall output of PVEP and Petrovietnam, at a time when the Group is actively accelerating oil and gas exploration and production activities.

The timely completion of Phase 3 of the Dai Hung project makes a meaningful contribution to the national goal of increasing output and ensuring energy security. It also stands as a testament to the remarkable growth and maturity of Petrovietnam’s team of officers, engineers, and workers.

The Dai Hung field in general, and Phase 3 in particular, truly represent one of the most outstanding milestones—embodying the spirit of initiative, self-reliance, perseverance, and innovation that Petrovietnam has cultivated and upheld throughout its 50-year journey.
